Reckendorfer Riesling Arioso 2024 is an alcohol-free Riesling from Austria. After classical winemaking, the alcohol is gently removed through a membrane; the aromatic core is preserved and then balanced to create the finished beverage.

Dealcoholized wine

Dealcoholized wine begins as a classic wine: harvested, fermented, and aged. Only then is the alcohol removed – usually through vacuum distillation or reverse osmosis. The crucial factor is preserving the volatile aromatic compounds.

In vacuum distillation, the pressure in the tank is reduced so drastically that alcohol evaporates even at low temperatures between 30 and 40 °C. Some of the delicate, heat-sensitive aroma compounds can be preserved in the process, or collected beforehand and subsequently added back in.

Reverse osmosis separates alcohol and water using membranes, allowing for more precise control over body and acidity. What remains is wine in its original structure – with acidity, texture, and origin, but without the intoxication.

I tell our guests and customers: if you don't like this dealcoholized Riesling, then don't bother with the whole category. I mean it. If you're going to buy it, buy this one. The grapes from the Weinviertel region are of local quality, from select vineyards with the specific characteristics required for the process. Matthias Reckendorfer (Reckendorfer Winery) was involved every step of the way and wouldn't have let anything slip through that wasn't right. Why Riesling? Because it needs acidity and plenty of aroma and fruit. The winery operates according to (EU) organic principles.

Reckendorfer - Riesling Arioso (2024) BEHIND THE SCENES

PRODUCTION

Organic grapes from a designated vineyard in the Weinviertel region are fermented using traditional methods. Dealcoholization is achieved through reverse osmosis: a membrane separates the water and alcohol from the aromatic core of the wine; the aromatic component is then blended back into the wine with water. Finally, a touch of CO₂ is added.
